Food at the Heart of Life at Limewood

Enriching Daily Life Through Food

At Limewood, we believe food goes far beyond basic nourishment. It’s woven into the fabric of our activities programme, bringing people together through joy, creativity, and a sense of inclusion. Whether we’re celebrating a special occasion, marking a national day, or hosting interactive cooking sessions, food is always at the heart of what we do.

Creating Inclusive Dining Experiences

Our activities team works closely with our in-house chef to make sure every dining experience is accessible to all. We adapt textures, offer diabetic-friendly recipes, and create pureed versions of dishes so everyone can savour the flavours of each event.

Adapting to Changing Nutritional Needs

People with complex mental health needs often experience changes in taste, smell, or swallowing ability. They may develop new food aversions or find that their sense of taste becomes dulled. As a result, it’s crucial to serve soft, moist foods in smaller portions and use primary colours (red, yellow, and blue) on the plate. Taking these steps helps prevent potential health risks, such as dehydration, weight loss, and other related issues.

Inclusive Celebrations and Special Moments

When it comes to celebrating important holidays, we ensure each resident’s needs are met. From pureed Easter chicks to adaptations of traditional dishes, no one is left out of the festivities.

Showcasing Creativity Through Food Events

One of the most memorable events of 2024 was our weeklong Food Week celebration, which showcased our creativity and commitment to inclusivity. Each day featured a different culinary theme, beginning with a Puree Presentation to highlight moulded foods for residents requiring specific textures, followed by Taco Tuesday with an array of flavourful fillings. Midweek, we focused on hydration with smoothies and infused waters, then moved on to “Make Your Own Pizza” sessions, along with diabetic-friendly cakes adorned with edible flowers. Later in the week, we served the beloved British classic Fish and Chips and finished with Little Big Bites, an American-style feast of hot dogs, burgers, waffles, and pancakes. The entire home came together—residents, families, staff, and the activities and kitchen teams—to create these inclusive, delicious experiences.

Sensory Experiences and Cultural Connections

Even during our sensory armchair trips, food plays an essential role, as seen when residents virtually visited Spain, dipped their feet in petal-filled water, enjoyed refreshing mocktails, and indulged in churros with chocolate.

Encouraging Participation and Independence

Beyond special events and themed weeks, cooking remains an interactive part of our everyday activities. Residents frequently participate in hands-on sessions, whether rolling pastry, grating cheese, or measuring ingredients. These tasks not only stimulate fine motor skills, which often decline in people living with dementia, but they also provide a rewarding sense of purpose. Different aromas and textures can be especially beneficial for those affected by changes in their sense of smell.

Bringing People Together Through Shared Experiences

Claire, Manager at Limewood, reflects on the impact of these food-centred experiences: “Food is more than sustenance—it’s a way to connect, celebrate, and create shared experiences. Through thoughtful planning and collaboration, we ensure every resident feels included and valued. Whether it’s a festive feast, a cooking session, or simply enjoying tea with friends, food continues to enrich life at Limewood.”
